Are days of Google over?
Enter CHATGPT - the new talk of the town - an interactive AI which has human like conversational ability. Read along to know why the world can't stop talking about it.
With CHATGPT dominating social media, countless people are posting their experiences with the new AI platform. CHATGPT has become an unavoidable phenomenon. And why not? In just 5 days of its inception, CHATGPT gained 1 million users. To give you a perspective, it took Netflix 41 months, Facebook 10 months and Instagram 2.5 months to reach 1 million users!
Before we dive deeper, let’s decode what CHATGPT really is.
CHATGPT is a chatbot which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer and has conversational capabilities – it can interact with users and have human like conversations. You must be wondering – isn’t that what bots like Siri, Alexa, etc are about? Well, yes and no!
While CHATGPT also gives you instant answers when you type your questions like Siri or Alexa – it is slightly different. CHATGPT is by far the most powerful language model to exist.
Why, you ask? Well, CHATGPT is trained on massive amounts of data – data that other platforms do not have access to. This means CHATGPT can give you answers to questions that other platforms are not capable of answering. This is one of the reasons that CHATGPT has taken the world by the storm – by providing answers that you do not expect a bot to answer. Here is a quick example:
CHATGPT is also considered powerful in the sense that all its answers are unique and they improve every day. How?
The platform is based on 175 billion (yes, with a B) parameters – parameters which enable it to make human like conversations. These parameters are widely used in AI writing and SEO tools – but CHATGPT has something extra – reinforcement learning – which means that the chatbot evolves every time after a human interaction. In other words, it is a self-improving chatbot! Think of it as a baby who is learning to speak – the baby picks up different things from different people and uses it to create her own language.
If you are one of our geeky readers, here is how OpenAI explains reinforcement learning:
CHATGPT is made by a company named OpenAI, which is heavily backed by funding from Microsoft. The same company also came up with GPT 3.0 which is also seen as a prequel to CHATGPT by some.
This sounds all fancy. But how can we really fathom the power of CHATGPT? Let’s look at some of the achievements of CHATGPT till date:
A mental health tech company in New York is using CHATGPT for emotional support of their patients and has seen amazing results. Patients are feeling comforted and feel that they have a friend.
You must have come across headlines that students are no more copying in exams – they are using CHATGPT as this platform gives unique answers every time, therefore, no plagiarism! Are all plagiarism detection tools going out of business soon? Maybe..
CHATGPT can help one write essays, speeches, and form opinions on very specific topics which no other chatbot has the capability to do – not to mention the countless hours of research it saves you. Not just that, students can write codes for their computer science assignments in under a minute. It does question the prevailing education systems that are mostly based on memory rather than intelligence. All developers out of business soon? Well..
As such AI systems as CHATGPT penetrate the markets, maybe critical thinking will be more valued – but that’s a topic for another time!
Not enough beef for you? Wait, there’s more..
If you are an everyday person and you ask CHATGPT to be your personal trainer, given your weight and age, it will create a meal plan, recipes to cook it, a table of weakly meal plan and grocery list of ingredients, while giving you exact calorie deficit that you need to lose those ten pounds you are wishing to lose! All dieticians, personal trainers, and fitness propagandas out of business soon? Who knows..
Still not convinced about the power of CHATGPT? Read along!
There is an upcoming start-up in USA named Do Not Pay which has come up with the first ever robotic lawyer website using CHATGPT. The robot lawyer helps customers file complaints, cancel subscriptions and more. Do you think lawyers will be out of business soon? Maybe..
An 11-year old kid in USA created a Harry Potter themed videogame using CHATGPT which has already been played by thousands!
We can go on and on with the list. CHATGPT is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Artificial Intelligence.
Now the million-dollar question – if CHATGPT is so cool and capable, why do all of us not have it in our smartphones already? If CHATGPT gives such unique and elaborate answers to all kinds of subjective questions, why do we need Google? Well, it is a matter of cost.
Large language models take a large amount of computing power – in simple words, service will be too expensive and latency will be too high. Currently, 1 AI answer costs 10x-100x more than a regular web search. According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the cost of a single response is in the single digit. Let us say that it is 50 paise (Rs 0.5 INR). This would mean that Google, which carries out 850 crore searches every day, it would mean a cost of Rs. 425 crore per day to have a google search scale AI language system in its current form. According to some experts, OpenAI is spending around three million dollars every month to run CHATGPT. It does costs millions of dollars to train and operate such a system, plus the bandwidth of keeping it alive when it is under heavy use requires a lot of expensive software.
So, until another genius pops up and solves this AI scaling problem, we can expect Google to stay!
Jokes apart, with the increasing number of examples of amazing things that CHATGPT can do every day, it is very clear that the ability to ask open ended questions about anything and receiving responses that are not hand-coded has a huge market with virtually unlimited demand! And CHATGPT seems to have just cracked it!
